Insight: Deaf Bill / Addiction Recovery / Mushrooms / Field Guide

Deaf Bill The deaf community has long declared that deafness is not an illness that needs curing. A bill in the California legislature has recently fueled that fire even more. The proposal includes an informational brochure that details medical options for parents of deaf children to choose from, but deaf activists say medical options are not necessary to fix something that isn't broken. We'll talk with voices from both sides of the debate.

Addiction Recovery September is National Recovery Month. You'll hear personal stories about addiction and the struggle towards recovery.

A kick-off event called "Recovery Happens" is taking place on the West Steps of the State Capitol on Wednesday, Sept. 1st. Festivities begin with breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by a rally at 11 a.m.

Field Guide California is home to some of the most diverse agriculture in the nation given its vast array of environments. "A Field Guide to California Agriculture" is a new book co-authored by two Nevada-based professors that documents what is growing where and why. You'll meet the two authors and figure out just how they were able to put such an expanse of information into one small book.

Mushrooms How much can one fabulous fungus do? An upcoming lecture addresses that question through fact, fiction, and folklore of mushrooms. We'll speak with the UC Davis plant pathologist giving the lecture to find out all about this highly varying plant, which can be used as a source of food or as a deadly toxin.

Dr. Michael Davis opens up the 7th Friday Lecture Series season on Friday, Sept. 3 at the Old State Theater, 985 Lincoln Way, Auburn.
