Dan Schnur/ Voter Turnout/ Oil Spill Update/ Food Critic


Dan Schnur The agency that regulates money in California politics has a new leader. The new chairman of the Fair Political Practices Commission is Dan Schnur, a veteran Republican strategist who now works at USC and UC Berkeley. For five years, he was chief media spokesman for Gov. Pete Wilson and he was also Director of Communications for Senator John McCain's 2000 presidental campaign. Today on Insight, you'll meet Dan Schnur and hear about his role at the FPPC.

Voter Turnout How are things going this morning at the polls? Are election workers busy? Are there any problems? We're going to check in now with election workers in four local counties.

Oil Spill Update One of the many controversial issues that cropped up in connection with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is the use of chemical dispersants. It's standard practice to use dispersants in spills, but the heavy use of them in this spill, particularly in deep water, became a cause for concern. An internation panel of experts was quickly convened late last month to advise the federal government and BP. One of those experts was a UC Davis toxicologist. We'll talk with Ronald Tjerdeema about it.

Food Critic on Food Stamps What kind of future awaits restaurant and other food critics? Earlier this year, even the "Wall Street Journal", one of America's biggest and richest papers, let go its longtime restaurant critic. Another former newspaper restaurant critic is making news right now. Ed Murrieta left the "Tacoma News Tribune" a couple of years ago to start a food blog, but now he's in hard times and using food stamps to eat. This month, he wrote aobut his experience for the "Seattle Times" newspaper. We'll talk with the Roseville native about his experience.
