Lucky Boy

February 2017 book selection

Lucky Boy

by Shanthi Sekaran

February 1, 2017 | Vicki Lorini

Struck by a story on NPR, Shanthi Sekaran had the inspiration to start what would become her book Lucky Boy.  She now will come full circle and present her work, in conversation, with Donna Apidone at CapRadio Reads.  It was a story about a Guatemalan mother who was fighting to get her child back from the American couple who were in the process of adopting him and she just couldn't stop thinking about the case and, more importantly, the people involved. In writing this book, Sekaran did an immense amount of research. She interviewed many professionals in the area of immigration and even spent time in the part of Mexico her central character came from. Living in Berkeley allowed her to give a full picture of this left leaning town, and now, even there, it is so difficult for immigrants who are undocumented.  Her story, and the story of Lucky Boy are both so interesting, you won't want to miss this interview.  Please get your tickets, while they are available.  We will see you Tuesday, February 7 at 6pm in our Community Room.

Our book selection for February, Shanthi Sekaran's Lucky Boy starts with a difficult decision and an even more difficult journey.  Soliman Castro-Valdez sets off from Mexico on an optimistic road that soon finds her lost, pregnant and undocumented in a country she doesn't really understand. It is her son, Ignacio, who will cause two women both heartbreak and joy. The book and story are brilliant and tragic, but mostly very  Readable. Come and listen to author Sekaran speak with our own Donna Apidone on Tuesday, February 7. At 6pm in our Community Room. Make sure to get your tickets as this hometown girl will draw a big crowd. And the book's story is one you'll want to hear.

With our new President, many people are interested in the immigration policies of the United States Of America.  In our book and author selection for February, Lucky Boy by Shanthi Sekaran, this issue becomes personal.  Publishers Weekly describes the book this way: "Humanizes the issue of illegal immigration...readers will be emotionally invested". Having read the book, I can say this is an understatement.  Please join us for an "in conversation" with Donna Apidone and Shanthi Sekaran, Tuesday, February 7 at 6pm in our Community Room.  They will discuss this amazing and compassionate novel of  love for one very Lucky Boy. Get your tickets now.

We started our year out with another rollicking party, this one featuring Andrew Grant.  We hope you enjoyed it, because we have one more author event, before we head back to Face To Face Book Club meetings in March.  February will have us featuring Shanthi Sekaran in conversation with Donna Apidone.  Sekaran, whose previous book The Prayer Room was a feature of The Bee Book Club and a big event at the old Borders store on Fair Oaks, has a new book called Lucky Boy.  I will tell you that I read a draft of this book many months ago and immediately contacted the publisher asking for an opportunity to host Ms. Sekaran as soon as the book was released. I got my wish, and Shanthi Sekaran will be with us, Tuesday, February 7 at 6pm in our Community Room.  Join us then, and learn how this thoughtful and thought provoking book about immigration, fertility, tradition and parenting came to be written.
