Im sure many of you remember the original series Roots, taken from the book of the same name by Alex Haley. We all sat in our living rooms, transfixed with that story. Homegoing, our August selection by Yaa Gyasi takes us much further back. Beginning in Ghana around 1760 this book takes us through the slave trade to the present day. Gyasi has an interesting way of telling this story, through two descendants of a Ghanain woman, separated in Ghana only to find themselves close many generations later. The novel, had it’s start in the author’s 2009 trip back to Ghana, where she was born. the book is fascinating, and comes from a viewpoint not often spoken about, the culpability of the African’s in the slave trade. Fascinating to read, and it will be very interesting to discuss. Please join us on August 8 at either 6 or 8pm in our Community room for this discussion.
