As with most historical novels, along with the characters and the settings, we learn about a particular time and place. in the case of our August selection, Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, we learn first about The Middle Passage. This horrific journey began for many on the coast of Africa. Commercial forts were built there by Europeans, specifically to enable the transport of slaves from The Gold Coast to America and WesternEurope. The initial two lives lives we read about in this amazing book wind from being “cargo” on a ship leaving The Gold Coast to being the wife of a slave trader. The book will follow parallel lives of their descendants and leave the reader with a new perspective on the origins of African Americans in this country. It will give us food for a lengthy and interesting conversation when we meet for our Face to Face meeting, Tuesday, August 8 at 2 or 6pm. Please join us.
