All The Stars In The Heavens

March 2017 book selection

All The Stars In The Heavens

by Adriana Trigiani

March 8, 2017 | Vicki Lorini

How much of our book selection, All The Stars In The Heavens by Adriana Trigiani is true? The book, a novel based on the life of Loretta Young, is told through the eyes of a young girl, who has to leave a convent, and becomes Young's secretary and lifelong friend.  This character Alda Ducci is one made up by the author, but through her, we meet real life characters like Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy and even David Niven, who lives in Loretta Young's mother's pool house.

Gable and Young did have a romance, and a child together.  Less is known about Spencer Tracy, but there is a trove of information available on the web about all the actors mentioned in this novel of the Silver Screen.  It's fun to do some research while you read the book.  Give yourself a picture of who these people, who were larger than life on the screen, really were.  We'll have lots to talk about when we meet on March 14 at 2 or 6pm in our Community Room.  Please join us.

Our selection for March, Adriana Trigiani's All The Stars In The Heavens is both readable and lush.  The descriptions of the world of the 1930's Hollywood stars, their

clothes and their homes is a real treat.  Trigiani, who is well known for her vast research really seems to get it right.  You will need to put a sweater on, while reading about Loretta Young and Clark Gable on the set up in Washington, in the dead of Winter filming The Call Of The Wild.  Be prepared to start renting old movies because you will want to see the results of this and many more films starring the main characters in this boo, Loretta Young, Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy.  Put on your sequins and furs, and join me for a discussion of this fun book, Tuesday, March 14 at 2 or 6pm in our Community Room.  We'll have a ball!

there is more to the Hollywood story of All The Stars In The Heavens, by Adriana Trigiani than you may think.  Trigiani’s book is our March selection for CapRadio Reads.  One of the main characters in this glamorous story is a very unglamorous Sister Alda Ducci.  Sister Ducci is forced to leave her convent and begin a new journey as a secretary to young Miss Loretta Young.  The innocent Miss Ducci soon becomes much more to young Loretta, and at times it is difficult to tell which woman is more devout.  Over the years, through her own triumphs and tragedies, Alda is a true and lifelong friend to Young, and her entire family.  Trigiani has always had a wonderful way with characterization.  When you finish one of her books, you really miss the people who have populated the pages.  Please join us for a discussion of this book on Tuesday, March 14 at 2 or 6pm in our Community Room.  We’ll have a little bit of Hollywood, right here in Sacramento.

Is there one of us who hasn’t seen a Clark Gable movie? I am old enough to remember Loretta Young on television too. Lots has been written about both these stars, but I don’t think the story of their love/hate relationship has been widely covered.  In our March selection , All The Stars In The Heavens by Adriana Trigiani, we find out a lot of the details of their lives, we may not have known. Loretta Young’s strength came from her mother, also an amazingly independent woman for her time. Young’s early life in Hollywood was engineered by her mother, but Loretta herself was responsible for much of her family’s wealth. Her moral compass came from within.  Gable, of course, is another story.  You’ll really enjoy the scope of this story. Come join us for the discussion.  Tuesday, March 14 at 2 or 6pm in our Community Room.  Get your reservations now.

We had such a good time meeting Shanthi Sekaran, but I think we are all ready to get back to our Face To Face book discussion meetings.  I am happy to let you know that our March selection will be both fun and glamorous.  Adriana Trigiani’s latest book All The Stars in the Heavens takes us back to the Golden Age of Hollywood.  This is a novelization of the love story between Loretta Young and Clark Gable.  You will also find a little touch of Spencer Tracy thrown in for good measure. Trigiani, who is known for her books about rural Virginia and also her historical fiction that takes place in Italy has an entirely new venue for this book, Hollywood.  She does, however, make sure that at least one major character hails from Southern Italy, allowing us to journey there during this story.  She has a real flair for characterization, and I know you will be swept up by this love story.  Please get your place at the table reserved for the first Face To Face meeting of 2017.  Tuesday, March 14, at either 2 or 6pm in our Community Room.  See you there.
