House arrest has existed in Russia since the time of the Czars. When the main character, Count Rostov, becomes a prisoner at The Metropol Hotel his life will change forever. As the main character in our October book selection, A Gentleman In Moscow, the Count's adventures in the hotel start out reminding us of another person who lived in a similar hotel. Eloise, the wonderful little girl featured in many children's books, lived with her nanny, her turtle and her pug dog Weenie in The Plaza in New York City.  Her exploits may have been one of the influences on Amor Towles' characters Nina and Sofia in this book. Having read every Eloise, and this book twice, I am happy to say that all the characters in both books are quite charming, even if slightly devious. Even the chef, the Maitre D' and the concierge have fully developed senses of humor and loyalty.

Please join us as we bring these characters to life one last time.  We'll meet in the Community Room on October 10 at 6 pm and 2pm. Please join us.
