After a lovely, interesting and delicious evening with Georgeanne Brennan we at CapRadio Reads will be taking a month off from events and concentrating on the upcoming holidays. While on holiday however, we know you will be madly racing about, finding gifts for your friends and families and planning parties and get togethers. In these next pages, I hope to be able to help you in both these tasks. First, let me tell you about a book I have just finished, that would be an appropriate book for lovers of great writing and an interesting take on our culture. Set in 2008, in New York City, Behold The Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue takes on marriage, immigration, class and the dreams of two couples in New York City. Jenna and Neni Jong are a Camaroonian couple living in Harlem, hoping to make new lives in the US, just as the Great Recession hits. Mr. Jong lands a job working as a chauffeur in New York City. His new boss, Clark Edwards is a senior executive at Lehman Brothers and his wife Cindy is an Upper East Side mother of two boys. Both couple's worlds are rocked when the collapse of Lehman Brothers puts both men out of work. It is how these two families deal with the fall that is the basis of this story. The characters are captivating and the story is one we might all benefit from reading. I hope this book lands on either your gift or reading list this season.
