Are you using the time to catch up on books precariously stacked on your nightstand?  Maybe you are reading recipes, trying to decide on a new homemade cranberry sauce or that really fabulous green bean casserole. 

I've been reading maps, guide books and road signs while traveling all over the Southwest.  It was a glorious trip, but I really missed having the time to delve into a great book.  I had one with me, the new Tana French book, The Secret Place. If you haven't read her Irish Murder Squad books, you're in for a treat. You can start out with her first book, In The Woods, and binge-read all the way to this one, her fifth. You will immerse yourself in a part of Dublin not usually seen by outsiders and learn to love and despise the people in this unsettling part of a very beautiful city.

If you are missing the wonderful suggestions for new books that come from each meeting of CapRadio Reads, I'll give you a few of my latest favorites. A big, long, wonderful book of historical fiction is Ken Follett's latest, Edge of Eternity. It's the third and last in his Century Trilogy. This one, like the others, can be read as a stand alone, but you may want to start with number one. This book takes us through the Cuban Missile Crisis, the early Civil Rights movement and wraps up with Barack Obama being elected President. Follett's characters are a combination of real and imagined, and his thoroughness and historical perfection make these books a great way to revisit history. 

A shorter, possibly more "fun" book is Ruth Reichl's novel, Delicious. For those of you who have read the former Editor of Gourmet Magazine's memoirs, you know she is a very funny writer with an entire family of funny and crazy people to draw from. This book is a departure for her, since she has never been a writer of fiction. I thought she did a terrific job, although the story is not ALL fiction. It is a semi-autobiographical account of an editor whose magazine is sold out from under her. It's a fun read. It has a lot of great "foodie" moments and is also a tour of some of New York's most interesting spots.
