China Dolls, our April selection, written by Lisa See, has many stories to tell.

Although, at first glance, this is a novel about the experience of three Chinese-American girls in San Francisco, it quickly becomes apparent it is much more. First, the girls are individuals, despite their similar heritage. They come from different backgrounds and different parts of the country (maybe even different countries). How are their experiences the same? How are they different? How can we compare their experiences to what immigrants to this country are experiencing in 2015?

Reading this book has made me want to further examine the immigrant experience. How much does an immigrant give up, even sacrifice, to live in the US? Are immigrants who seek out the "American Life" aware of what will be lost as well as gained? Once again, the conversation surrounding this book will be enlightening. I hope you will join us on Tuesday, April 14, at 6:00 p.m., and participate.

As always, thanks for reading.
