When Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling) wrote The Cuckoo's Calling, she had her protagonist join a pretty exclusive club.  Hercules Poirot comes instantly to mind as a member, but so too do Harry Bosch, Miss Marple and Sam Spade. These great literary detectives all are successful, but they are also likable and flawed.

When we meet Cormoran, he is down on his luck, just broken up with his long-time girlfriend and in considerable physical and mental pain. He is, however, a very sympathetic character.  As I made my way through the book, I was keenly aware of cheering for him. I wanted him to discover the truth about Lula Landry's death and discover his own truth.

I read thrillers and mysteries all the time, and I now see that my favorites are books with a sleuth who is seeking the truth, not only for his client, but for himself. Our author has succeeded in making me cheer for Strike!

Make sure you sign up to cheer for Strike and for our guest moderator, Jenny O'Mara, on November 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Capital Public Radio.

While we are on the subject of cheering, we have another opportunity for you to cheer for one of our own. Please join us on Saturday, November 8, for the official book launch of Donna Apidone's new book, TransForMission. Donna will take the interviewee chair for once and be interviewed by Rick Kushman about this magnificent new work of hers. It's Second Saturday, so come one, come all for a party at the studios to celebrate this publication. Sign up on the CapRadio Reads website for this event now!
