"A novel so ambitious and fully realized. It this is where Anthony Marra begins his career, I can't imagine how far he will go." Ann Patchett
"A Novel So Ambitious and Fully Realized..."
August 5, 2013
Anthony Marra was schooled at the Iowa Writer's Workshop and is a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. After reading his book, A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, I appreciate even more what these fine institutions can do for a writer. However, just as performance enhancing drugs can make a good bike rider in to a great rider, no amount of schooling could have made Anthony Marra the writer he is today if his level of talent hadn't started out at a very high place. His words make you weep and howl at the injustice of life, and cry at the simple pleasures. Did you find yourself holding your breath, hoping you were wrong about where life was taking these characters? If you've finished the book, has it left you yet? How many people have you told they MUST read this book?
I am so proud that Mr. Marra will be visiting CapRadio Reads on Monday, August 12. Please, Sign Up Now and join us.
As always, thank you for reading.

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena is a tremendous book. The story takes place in Chechnya, a place we are sadly now more familiar with, because of the Boston Bombings. What I did not know when I read this book, nearly 6 months ago, was what horrific things were going on there during their long and bitter war the the Russians.
This story takes place over five days in the midst of that war. The setting is a bombed out hospital, and the characters are a young girl, a failed doctor and a female surgeon all of whom are trying to cope in an incrdiblly difficult situation. I won't say much more here, but what I will tell you is, be prepared. This book will not let you go, once you start and it will stay with you long after you have finished.
I look forward to seeing you at the author event and I can't wait to hear this conversation.
As always, thanks for reading.
