When some people hear this particular melody, they
think of the Anglican hymn, "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken."
Others recall the "Emperor" String Quartet by Joseph
Haydn. And others hear the German national anthem, once called
"Deutschland uber alles," and today known as "Song of the
Germans."
In fact, the tune has served all three purposes, but
-surprisingly - its origins lie in the British
national anthem, "God Save the King."
