Marine Mammal Center rescuers at work

An injured sea lion spotted in the Sacramento River near Old Sacramento is proving elusive for rescuers.

Experts from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito were brought in to search for the animal…thought to be an adult male California sea lion. He has an injury near his right eye.
The center’s spokesman, Jim Oswald, was on Capital Public Radio’s Insight Thursday. Oswald said they haven’t had any luck finding him yet. As for why the animal is injured:
“We don’t know exactly what caused that wound yet. What we had to go off of were a few photos from a concerned citizen. We hope that if the wound’s not too serious it can probably live a productively life out to sea and its wounds heal due to the salt water.”
Oswald says if they do spot the animal, they’ll do their best to treat his injuries.
This year, the center has rescued more than 1,500 marine mammals suffering from gunshot wounds, entanglements, shark bites and diseases.
