If you’re looking for office space, you may be able to get a good deal from an unlikely landlord: The Sacramento City Unified School District.

The cash-strapped district is raising revenue by renting out space at its main office building on 47th Avenue and Stockton Boulevard.
Tom Barentson is the district’s Deputy Superintendent and Chief Financial Officer. He says rent money will help the district deal with a budget deficit.
“This year, we’re going to generate about $450,000 starting in the fall and then we hope to increase that as we move along. We have quite a few people that are interested but the space needs to be more of an educational nature. It just isn’t regular commercial space.”
Barentson says they have about 10,000 square feet of vacant office space available. So far, they have one tenant: the City of Sacramento’s after-school program called “A Fourth R”.
The district is also trying to lease several of its vacant school sites.
