Before the panel discussion begins, we will help our audience get into the right frame of mind with a short session by laughter specialists, Erin Cote and Shannon Plaster from ULaugh, who will offer a hands-on demonstration of the medical benefits of laughter.
Staying Healthy
Our first segment will explore ways to say healthy with some advice from Dr. Lisa Liu, assistant physician in chief for health promotion at Kaiser Permanente in south Sacramento. Dr. Liu will be joined by the Institute for Restorative Health’s Dr. Marco Vespignani, who specializes in alternative and integrative approaches. This panel will explore topics including:

- What is the latest information on how traditional and alternative approaches can work together to prevent illness?
- How can patients know which alternative therapies are effective, and which are not?
- What options do people have to save money and maintain adequate care, especially with regard to prescription medications?

The Mind-Body Connection
Licensed marriage and family therapist, Kelly Richardson, and Dr. Richard Bermudes, psychiatrist and founder of Mindful Health Solutions, will explore the relationship between mental and physical health. From their different perspectives, the audience will learn more about:
- Harnessing the powerful connection between mind and body;
- Recognizing the symptoms of depression and how it differs from sadness and sorrow and knowing when to get professional help;
- Learning how experts integrate cognitive-behavioral therapy with medication;
- Managing anger and harnessing the power of healthy thinking during stressful times; and
- Identifying the cultural aspects of mental illness.
“We’re all in it together”: The Community Approach to Staying Physically and Mentally Fit
In our final section, Sam McManis from the Sacramento Bee's Sunday Health & Fitness section will be joined by Dusty Robinson, Team Director from Fleet Feet and Randii MacNear, Market Manager of the Davis Farmers Market, to discuss ways that regular people can incorporate fitness and healthier eating into their everyday lives. Capital Public Radio’s Elaine Corn will also give our audience her secrets for eating seasonally on a budget by visiting Sacramento’s abundant Farmers Markets. Other topics to be explored are:
