Amazon's new Sacramento distribution or fulfillment center is about ready to get rolling. The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says the facility, near Sacramento International Airport, will likely open within days.
"It's expected to employ about 1,600 people," says Sorich. "And there are a couple of notable things about the jobs that Amazon will provide locally. For starters, the area's labor market is already tight. Now that could make it even harder to find workers in other sectors with the arrival of this fulfillment center."
Sectors such as restaurants and hospitality. Critics also point out that the Amazon jobs won't be high-paying. The average associate at the Sacramento fulfillment center will earn $13.25 an hour with benefits.
"That is higher than California's minimum wage," says Sorich. "But even though these jobs can help employ entry-level workers, some observers note that you can't really build an economy around these types of positions."
Several new additions to the Sacramento dining scene were announced this week. Sorich says a beer place will be opening in a Sacramento suburb.
"There's a new neighborhood pub coming to Tahoe Park," says Sorich. "Sac City Brews Neighborhood Tap House could have its soft opening in mid-November in the Tallac Village shopping center."
And a couple of franchises are looking to open sites in Sacramento. Cracker Barrel, which is popular in the midwest and south, has confirmed plans to fill a spot on Howe Avenue, near Northrop Avenue, that used to be a buffet restaurant.
And an Anaheim-based chain - The Pizza Press - is looking for locations in the area to open eight sites over the next several years.
"It has a 1920s Americana newspaper theme," says Sorich. "The CEO has a background in international business but he's just always been interested in newspapers."
