A public forum on the future of Sleep Train Arena in Natomas was held this week.
The Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says many people want to replace the former home of the Sacramento Kings with some type of economic development project that would result in more high-paying jobs.
"There's a focus on tech companies, especially those centered on bio-tech and clean-tech," says Sorich. "We probably won't see a decision in the immediate future at least. That's drawn some grumbling from members of the public. But officials say it's better to reuse the site correctly than quickly."
The Kings say they've already declined potential offers that aren't "forward thinking."
A Cameron Park-based company called Senworth is trying to compete in an increasingly crowded market: body cameras.
Sorich says the cameras are unique because they use Bluetooth sensors that can be placed in a police officer's gun holster.
"When the officer removes his weapon from the holster, the camera automatically starts recording," Sorich explains. "This technology locally comes as body cameras get national attention because of discussions about whether their use can reduce the incidence of excessive force by law enforcement."
The two-year old company has signed contracts with a few law enforcement agencies. More than 20 other agencies are using the cameras on a trial-and-evaluation basis.
Ana Apple, the children's clothing store in Old Sacramento that won Sacramento's Calling All Dreamers competition in 2014, announced this week that it plans to shut its doors.
The owner is a new mom. "She attributed the closure, at least partially, to a desire to spend more time with her daughter," says Sorich.
Other winners of the Calling All Dreamers competition - a candy store and a spice shop - are still open downtown. The most recent winner, Oblivion Comics & Coffee, has not yet opened.
More craft beer is coming to the downtown area near the Golden 1 Center. One of the newest is Pregame Burgers & Beer. It's expected to open on J Street next month.
