Expansion plans are at the center of a debate over the future of the Sacramento Convention Center downtown.
Right now the building covers 384,000 square feet. The city's tourism group Visit Sacramento wants to expand it by another 120,000 square feet.
But the Sacramento Business Journal's Digital Editor Sonya Sorich says the advocacy group Region Business wants the convention center to be at least a million square feet.
"Some business groups say that convention and leisure should be the next major industry in Sacramento," says Sorich. "But on the other hand, those with Visit Sacramento say that competing plans will further delay these renovations."
A bigger expansion would also require a new financing plan. Under the current proposal, the budget is $200 million.
The Sacramento City Council is scheduled to take up the issue early next month.
