Poll: Californians Support Gun Control, Legal Pot

A new poll finds most California voters are in favor of two controversial measures on the November election ballot.

More than 3,000 registered voters were surveyed.

"What we found is that there is very strong support for a gun control measure on the November ballot," says Ethan Rarick with the Institute of Governmental Studies at UC Berkeley, which asked voters about Proposition 63. The initiative would require instant background checks for people buying bullets and ban possession of high-capacity ammunition magazines.

The poll found 93 percent of Democrats support the measure along with 79 percent of Independents and 65 percent of Republicans.

Voters were also asked about another issue on the November ballot:

"We found that most Californians favor legalizing marijuana for recreational use - 63.8 percent supported that idea," says Rarick.

Prop 64 would decriminalize adult use of cannabis. Rarick says three-out-of-four Democrats and nearly two-out-of-three Independents support the initiative.

Meanwhile, 53 percent of Republicans opposed legalization compared to 62 percent last year.
