(AP) - The mother of an unarmed young man shot and killed by police in Fresno, California, says she is seeking financial damages from the city for her son's death.
Veronica Nelson filed a claim Tuesday saying that Fresno officers used excessive force when they opened fire, killing her son, Dylan Nobel, a white 19-year-old.
Police shot Nobel on June 25 during a traffic stop after reports of a man walking a Fresno street armed with a rifle. They later learned Dylan was unarmed.
Attorney Stuart Chandler, who represents the mother, says the shooting was inexcusable.
Police Chief Jerry Dyer has said that officers believed the teen was about to shoot them. The FBI has agreed to review the shooting.
Lt. Joe Gomez of the Fresno Police Department declined to comment.
