San Joaquin Valley military veterans learned today that a new clinic will be built to serve their needs.

Capital Public Radio's Rich Ibarra reports that veterans say the facility has been talked about for at least ten years.

Congressman Jerry McNerney of Stockton announced to a room full of veterans that the goal is finally in sight.

Congress appropriated the money for a 158,000 square foot clinic in French Camp and McNerney says the groundbreaking will come in January 2017.

"It'll provide mental health, dental, eye care, radiology, laboratory, and many other services. It'll serve as many as 87,000  veterans around the Central Valley."

Vietnam veteran Tino Adame says the need is growing not just for older vets but those who have served recently in the Middle East and elsewhere.

"As these younger vets start coming back home, they'll definitely be a big need for them."

Future plans include a 120-bed Community Living Center.
