City Transportation Department Senior Planner Sparky Harris says; ten years of plans and studies must be consolidated into one.

The idea is scheduled to go before the City Council tonight.

"We really need to have a comprehensive plan for the entire downtown to make sure it meets all the goals that we have for complete streets from river to Broadway and river to Alhambra, wider sidewalks, transit opportunities, street-lighting, way-finding," says Harris.

When the plan is completed, its components will be prioritized into short, medium and long-term projects.

Jim Brown with Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates says bike access around the Capitol, Old Sacramento, and the train depot all should be improved.

"How we can accommodate everybody who wants to ride a bike – not just the strong and fearless ones who are currently out there, but everybody else who is currently out there who would like to choose to ride a bike," says Brown.

City staff will put the consolidation project out to bid, solicit public ideas and return to the City Council in 14 months with the first transportation project.
