Low Lake Levels Reveal Submerged Settlements (Photo Essay)

Settlements started during the Gold Rush were submerged after the construction of Folsom Lake Dam. Left-over structures and items from this time are now visible due to extremely low water levels. On a recent afternoon, visitors explored the foundations of buildings, looked for artifacts, and discussed the history of the site with park rangers, history buffs and strangers.
