Brown Raises $10 Million for Governor's Race; GOP Nowhere Close

It’s not just that Brown has more than $10 million in the bank.  It’s that Republicans aren’t even close.

GOP political consultant Beth Miller says that’s because Brown has neutralized the special interests that would normally back a Republican for governor.  “There aren’t a lot of those donors who are enormously disgruntled with Jerry Brown’s governorship.  And so you’re not seeing this compelling interest to support another candidate to remove the incumbent,” Miller says.

Hence, these fundraising totals for Brown’s potential GOP challengers: Assemblyman Tim Donnelly had $27,000 on hand at the end of June.  And former Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado had just under $45,000 – though he owed about $3,000 more than that.

Former U.S. Treasury official Neel Kashkari is exploring a run, but hasn’t started raising money yet.
