On Folsom Boulevard and 59th Street, Shannon Blecha with Saint Mary’s Church Youth Group is hoping for one last rush of fireworks sales to push the group above its goal of $8,000 for the week.
“It’s been interesting this year," she said. "It was really slow the first four days and then yesterday was like the same amount as the first four days combined. It was amazing. “
Just a couple of blocks away, Louis Correia is selling fireworks to raise money for the West Campus Marching Band and Color Guard. His son, Gary plays bass drum.
“Band competitions: we have to pay for the bus, we’ve got to uniforms- repairing and existing uniforms- fixing instruments," he said. "All of that has to come out of money raised by the booster club.”
The church and the band are two of 400 non profits in Sacramento and Placer counties and 3,000 statewide that team with TNT Fireworks. Together the booths sell $70 million worth of fireworks every year. The non-profits net about $30 million.
