Changes to state regulations could mean a lot more paint is
properly disposed of at local landfills. A new statewide
program makes paint recycling free. And there is no longer a
restriction on the amount of paint a person can take to a landfill.
Marissa Juhler is with Yolo County's waste management
department, "Last year we recycled 131,000 pounds of paint.
SO, that's a significant amount of paint that comes through our
program already. And we anticipate those numbers to increase
by way of this new program."
She says the Yolo County landfill has also expanded its hours for collection. Latex and oil paints are now accepted every day of the week.
The paint program is funded by a 35-cent-per-gallon fee and a 75-cent-per-container fee on new paint purchases.
