In a statement, Safeway says the wages and benefits package allows the company to "compete successfully in the future."
The United Food and Commercial Workers' Local 8 says the
contract provides affordable healthcare for workers and
retirees. Safeway agreed to fund the union's health benefit
plan.
UFCW also represents striking workers at Raley's. In the company's last-and-final contract offer made in writing to the union, Raley's asks for healthcare benefits to expire when retirees turn 65 and become Medicare eligible.
