Beginning this week, people taking the train in and out of
Sacramento from the Sacramento Valley Station should notice some
significant changes.
Travelers will take a temporary walkway to a covered walkway
to new underground tunnels. The tunnels connect to the new
platforms that are about 500 feet closer to the old Railyard
buildings.
Luna Salaver with the Capitol Corridor says the walk to the
platforms may be longer, but it will be safer.
"No longer will our customers have to walk near open tracks,"
says Luna. "They'll go through a much safer walkway and once
the project is completed, not only will they have a safer way to
get between the station and the trains, but they'll also have many
amenities."
The new platforms also have standby power units for the
locomotives to charge so they don't have to idle at the
station.
Construction of the remainder of the covered walkway is
scheduled to start today.
