Over a million people in CalPERS will be paying an average of $30 more per month for their health premiums starting next year.
Some health policies will see higher increases than others.
Overall the rate hike is more than twice what it was in 2012.
Ann Boynton from CalPERS says about 7 percent of the rate increase is driven by health costs.
BOYNTON: "The way people use the system, waste inefficiency in the system, increases in cost overall for a variety of reasons"
The rate increase concerns Dr. Gerry Kominski of the UCLA
Center for Health Policy Research.
KOMINSKI: I think it's a fair indication that this is the kind of increase that other large employers are likely to see.
But CalPERS says the 2013 rate increase is higher than normal
because of factors unique to its system.
Some rate relief measures used in previous years, like federal
reimbursements, are no longer available.
