Backers of the tax proposal say they've turned in 848-thousand signatures to election officials, well more than required.
It would raise personal income taxes on all but the poorest Californians.
Michelle Parker is P-T-A President for the San Francisco Unified School District. She says the initiative would restore funding for classrooms.
Parker: "We have fewer teachers in classrooms, we have overcrowded classrooms and we've lost important programs such as music and art, our children our future is going to change all that."
She says unlike the tax measure backed by Governor Jerry
Brown, this one would send money to a separate trust fund that
cannot be touched by the legislature or the Governor. Brown
has argued that his measure is the only one that would address the
state's multi-billion dollar deficit.
