Governor Jerry Brown has proposed cutting Cal Grants for students attending private, for-profit and non-profit universities. Currently students can receive up to 97-hundred dollars a year. Brown proposes reducing that to four-thousand for students at for-profit schools and about 54-hundred dollars for students at private, non-profits. Belinda Aleman is a Financial Aid Counselor at Biola University in Los Angeles.
"I've met with students who were denied entrance into public institutions because there was simply not enough room. So right now, private institutions are really helping underserved students."
The State Department of Finance says the goal is to focus resources on students at public institutions. The estimated saving is around 300-million dollars. The Senate committee took no action on the proposal.
