The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery has handed out five-and-a-half million dollars to help fund projects that use recycled tires to make road sealant and asphalt.
Heather Jones with Cal Recycle says 40 city and county agencies applied for funding. Thirty made the cut this year.

Cal Recycle's receives $1.00 from every $1.75 surcharge on a tire sold in the state and uses that money to fund this program.
The Kiefer Landfill in Sacramento and the City of Roseville's Dry Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant were awarded a combined $700,000.
Jones says more than 33 million tires were recycled in California last year.
