The "Think Long" Committee announced late last year its
proposal to overhaul California's tax structure. It wants to
flatten the income tax and extend the sales tax to services with a
goal of creating more reliable revenue streams for the
state.
The committee's creator is billionaire Nicholas
Berggruen and its membership boasts several prominent
Californians, including former Governor Gray Davis and former U.S.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
The group now says it will concentrate its efforts on the
November 2014 ballot. The move goes toward clearing the way
for Governor Jerry Brown's proposed sales and income tax measure
for this year's ballot. In a statement, Brown said "Think Long" is
doing very important work and he looks forward to working on the
critical issue of more permanent tax reform.
