The Green Ribbon program was started this school year by the U.S. Department of Education. It is asking the states to submit the best examples of schools conserving energy and using those efforts to teach its students.
The Sacramento region recently received an award from the Green Building Council for financing green projects. Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says there is $100 million now available.
JOHNSON: "We have something we've been working on called a revolving loan fund, that will allow us to retrofit buildings, not only in city/county, but also in our region."
Johnson promised Sacramento City Unified will enter the state's green ribbon competition. The California's Department of Education is expected to start asking for submissions this week.
