Vicky Fletcher is with Yolo County Animal Services. She says the cat was mangled and there have been reports of coyotes in the area. There were no witnesses to the killing, but Fletcher says coyotes have been a problem in the area for the last two years.
FLETCHER: "Certainly the older coyotes and the young coyotes will hunt whatever is easiest to catch. And, unfortunately, pet cats will often fall into the category of being easier to catch than rabbits or other types of normal prey that they would live off of. "
Fletcher says pet owners can limit the risk of coyotes killing cats or small dogs by keeping pets and food inside the house. She says some coyotes are also attracted to uncontained compost.
