Gay rights advocates are applauding the UCLA Williams Institute study because it gives a numerical face to the gay community. But, the number of gay couples raising children has dropped by five percent in the last decade. Of the couples raising children, more are adopting.
GATES: "In 2000, it was only 8 percent of same sex couples raising kids that had an adopted child. As of 2009, it was up to 19 percent."
Gary Gates authored the study and says fewer gay parents are raising biological children because fewer people are entering traditional marriage, having children, and then coming out of the closet later. The study shows just about one percent of the state's households have same-sex couples. That's about 125 thousand households.
