Commentary: Arnold's Indiscretion

I'm neither shocked nor bothered that Schwarzenegger has a "love child." And I find all the "tsk, tsk"ing silly. He comes out of Hollywood and body-building - two of the most misogynistic and sex-saturated corners of our misogynistic and sex-saturated culture.

Any voters who paid attention knew he was probably a serial groper, and probably played around. Never mind Maria Shriver's shrill, heat-of-the-campaign, stand-by-my-man defense.

Our demand for sexual purity is unreasonable. We insist on perfect little families, with adoring wives, cute kids and faithfulness. When politicians fail to meet that standard - Senator John Edwards, Governors Elliot Spitzer and Mark Sanford, President Clinton- we heap scorn upon them.

The men aren't always the bad guys. Rich men, handsome men, powerful men - and Arnold was all three - are often pursued by aggressive women.

Finally if we are really concerned about the children (and I'm talking about all the children: Maria and Arnold's four, and "the other woman's" "love child"), we should all of us - myself included - back off and afford them the dignity of privacy.

Sadly, in our celebrity obsessed world - fat chance of that happening.
