The new measure would legalize and regulate marijuana for recreational use for Californians 21 and older. It would also allow pot to be taxed. The initiative is similar to proposition 19 - which voters rejected last year. James Gray is a retired Superior Court Judge from Orange County:
"I have seen in my own courtroom that what we are doing is not only not working, we are unnecessarily ruining people's lives and I am standing here before you saying that repealing marijuana prohibition is one of the most patriotic things I can do for the country I love."
Opponents like Bishop Ron Allen of the International Faith-Based Coalition say Prop. 19's failure makes them confident they can successfully fight this initiative:
"We thought that they would go home and just get under the covers and lay in the bed, but as we see that they're coming out again so quickly and so we've been gearing up and ready for this fight."
