Sacramento County Interim Executive, Steve Szalay says the county's $70 million budget deficit will be eliminated entirely by cuts.
"All general fund services from public safety to health and social services, to parks to animal care, every kind of county service that we have will take reductions."
Szalay says the county will have to lay off more than 320
full-time employees. He says labor unions have agreed to forego
salary and benefit increases to help reduce the number of
layoffs. He says raising property taxes or fees is not a
viable option.
"Current revenue should pay for current services.
And we should not be in the position of asking residents to pay
more for less services."
Sacramento County's revenues and expenditures are slowly
approaching equilibrium. Last year's deficit was twice as much as
this year's. Next year's is projected to be half as much as this
year's.
