The Department of Fish and Game is releasing nearly three million salmon smolt.
Dana Michaels with Fish and Game says the salmon population has been so low in recent years that the commercial and sport fishing seasons have been seriously reduced or eliminated.
Dana Michaels: "It's a variety of causes from ocean conditions to river conditions to water flow. We've got a good high water flow this year, and so we're hoping that will increase the chances they'll return."
Fish and Game says a quarter of the smolt released typically
return within two to five years.
