Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg and Assembly Speaker John Perez have both called floor votes for 1 p.m. Lawmakers are expected to consider Governor Jerry Brown's spending plan, which calls for billions in cuts - and billions in tax extensions. But there's no deal between Republicans and Democrats on the taxes. Lawmakers could approve the cuts alone. Governor Jerry Brown:
"Every cut we can take, I'll take it. And I would invite the Republicans to offer up at least one cut. So far they're offering up more ways to spend money, not ways to save money."
Brown has been negotiating with several Republican Senators to
try to secure their votes. The Senators are seeking state
spending limits and changes to public employee pensions. The
vote could end up being what's often known as a "drill" at the
Capitol - where members publicly debate the issues, but no budget
is passed.
