District Set to Boost Fundraising Efforts

Hundreds of California school districts have foundations that raise money for class supplies and training programs.  Sacramento City Unified does too - but Superintendent Jonathan Raymond says it's not a useful one:

Raymond: "The name doesn't reflect the strategic direction of the district.  And the purpose - really, it didn't have a real stated purpose."

So the district is refocusing it to fit the superintendent's strategic plan and increase its fundraising.  Raymond says the foundation will fund district programs, starting with one to recruit and train strong principals.  After all, he says, given the state budget crisis...

Raymond: "We've gotta be aggressive and got to start to move, because education in California is just not being supported anymore."

The second initiative is a pilot program for donations in the Pocket neighborhood.  People in the community want to raise money to reduce class size and retain teachers at individual schools. The board tabled this initiative until next week.
