John Malson in the Department of Finance says it's no surprise that people from other states don't want to move to California, where the unemployment rate remains above12 percent. But he says it did come as a surprise that foreign immigrants are also opting not to move to the Golden State.
"If the economy is like it has been in the last several years, that is probably an indication of why foreign migration has dropped. They will not come into an area where the economy does not allow them to work."
Malson says both documented and undocumented immigrants have accounted for much of California's past population growth. He blames the economy for the fact that California grew by four percent less than expected since 2000.
The state congressional districts remain unchanged, meaning
California will once again send 53 representatives to the
House.
