The handing out of turkeys took place Monday and Tuesday of this
Thanksgiving week. Kelly Siefert, with the Sacramento Food Bank,
says a line formed around the block.
"Families formed the line down Third Avenue, up
34th , then down Fourth Avenue, and then made another
turn. It was quite a significant line. People came as early as 6
o'clock."
Frozen turkeys were disbursed with stuffing, mashed potatoes,
yams, gravy mix and vegetables at a rate of nearly seven-hundred an
hour. Siefert says the record number of families served this year
was up fifteen-hundred over last year.
"The main reason that we gave out so many turkeys is that
there's just an increase in need. We have more families than ever
before that have never asked for help."
All turkeys distributed by the food bank had been donated.
Some came in large quantities from companies and offices. Others
came from individuals who donated one or two.
