Not that there's anything wrong with strawberries as we ease
into holiday mode. Produce expert Michael Marks of Your Produce
Man, says the recent cool, damp weather in the state's biggest
strawberry regions of Watsonville and Salinas is to THANK.
Strawberries growers, they were stripping their plants of anything that had any color because it was starting to rain.
The strawberries were quickly put into distribution. Retailers
grabbed them to FILL cases while they wait for behind-schedule
tangerines and navel oranges to come in. The strawberry price
drop is a local aberration. Marks says the salvaged berries look
great, but they're too soft to ship past the Rockies.
So that left a whole bunch of strawberries for the
Left Coast.
The California strawberry crop is worth $1.8 BILLION dollars.
The recently lowered price for strawberries should hover at about
$3.99 for two pounds, and is expected to last a couple of
weeks.
