Eric Sakach, senior law enforcement specialist for the Humane Society of the U-S, says it's easier for people to sympathize with dogs than chickens. After all, he says, most of us have dogs, and most of us eat chickens.
But Sakach says people might care more about cock fighting if they ever saw a game. Cock fighters tie knives to their chickens, and take bets on which one will die first.
"It's a brutal business, its' about money, and it's a bout gambling. And the fact that it's about chickens might not get too many people excited on first blush. If you ever see one, that's a different story."
Sakach says neighboring states treat cock fighting as a
felony. But first offense cock fighting in California is
misdemeanor. So cock fighters who are caught in states nearby often
move their business to California, where the penalty is just a
fine.
