Democratic Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg says he knew the Governor's vetoes would cut deeply, but he had no idea they'd add up to a billion dollars.
Speaking at a Sacramento child care center, he says he certainly didn't think almost half of that would be cuts to child care and human services.
"And in a way I guess he thinks he got the last word but part of the message here today is that we will be back and we will do all in our power over the next few months to make sure we reverse this."
Steinberg says the work on reversing those cuts will begin as soon as the legislature returns in January.
