The approval of dozens of building permits in Natomas last year set off a chain of reactions. For one thing, the federal government got upset, since the permits violated a moratorium on new growth until the flood risk in Natomas is reduced. FEMA officials told the city to correct the violations, and the council will vote on a "corrective action plan" tomorrow night. It includes spending $350,000 on flood protection equipment.
Also, the public outcry over the illegal permits led to an audit of the department. The audit was released last week. It says Sacramento employees regularly violated city and state laws and failed to collect more than two million dollars in fees. Council members will get their chance to weigh in on the audit tomorrow night - and chances are they'll have their soapboxes ready.
