"Cash for Appliances" Still has Plenty of Rebates Left.

Four months after its launch, California’s Appliance Rebate program still has more than half of its funds left.

The Cash for Appliances program kicked off on Earth Day back in April with 35 million dollars.
 
“We got a lot of good press early on and so the activity did start fairly robustly and then faded a little bit.”
 
Anthony Eggert serves on the California Energy Commission. He says there’s more than 19 and a half million dollars left to give away in rebates.
 
“Subsequently we’ve also expanded the program to include new appliances.”  
 
Eggert says it’s no longer just refrigerators, AC units, and washing machines. They’ve also added freezers, dishwashers, and water heaters. 
 
The new products must also adhere to national and state energy efficiency standards and the old ones have to be recycled. Eggert says the program is first come first served and goes until the money runs. He says that may be as soon as early fall.
